I am the author of Grounded and the editrix of the What Would Madame Defarge Knit? series of knit (and crochet) pattern books where the patterns are based on characters from classic literature.
I’ve been knitting up some carzy for my kids which I hope to be able to share with you soon (I have to wait for approval) but in the meantime, I collected a few nifty cast-ons I wish I’d had to start Jane’s Ubiquitous Shawl with! I think it would have helped. Disappearing Cast-on-from-Middle
I swear to you, I need this key ALL the time. I thought I’d share it with you, too. All of my yarn labels have the little codes on them and I can never remember precisely what’s what.
In the book you will find 28 patterns written by designers you may be familiar with (some returning from the first Defarge book) and new designers I’m thrilled to introduce to you.
As in the previous book, we have a range of difficulty levels so everyone should be able to find something to love. You can see pretty pics at Ravelry. As before, I think you’ll find yourself falling in love with these women (and a man! Yes!) who have created these lovely patterns for you. Their essays and stories of their acts of creation are heartfelt, honest, and in few cases, just darn funny. While building the book I, over-and-over, felt myself nodding in agreement, knowing I’d found a kindred spirit.
I hope you feel the same.

Actually, I drink more tea these days, but a tea cozy is a totally different thing.
This puppy fits a cup from that place that’s named after a character from Moby Dick but has an odd-looking green mermaid as it’s logo (ahem, which lets those of you who hate the place overlook that I’m using their cups as units of measure).
This little pattern is part of my plaited cast-on class, but there is enough information in here for you to teach yourself.
I know. That seems silly, but I thought you’d like to learn even if I can’t be right there to teach you—plus there’s another pattern we use in the class, too.
It’s simple.
It’s great practice for British and Continental knitting.
It works well with wickedly varied handspun (I used some of my earliest in one of my test-runs).
It’s quick and easy.
And the nice thing about the plaited cast-on is that even if you mess up, it’ll look really cool (ask me how I know).
The Spinner’s Book of Yarn Designs: Techniques for Creating 80 Yarns is the book I wish I’d had when I started spinning. Let me say right up front it’s not specifically a beginners book, per se, but it IS inspirational—and I think that’s awfully important when you first start out. If you paired this with a true “how to” book I think any new spinner would have plenty to work with.
Sarah Anderson did an amazing job in this book on a number of points:
the photos are great
the sections are color-coded on the page edges so you can navigate quickly and easily
the writing is friendly and funny (you can absolutely hear her voice)
she includes pictures of work done by her family (and Lordy, what a talented lot they are!)
she isn’t biased (she spindles, she spins on a wheel, she knits, she crochets)
she includes scale photos of her yarns, close enough to see the fibres and angles of the twist
she explains S- and Z- better and more clearly than anything else I’ve seen
she has these nifty little removable cards at the end.
She also has a genius section on socks. This would have sold me even if the rest was lousy (which it is not). She brings up the rumor (which I’d heard too) that chain-plyed yarn wears unevenly and causes holes to form more quickly in socks. So she tested it. I won’t tell you the genius thing she came up with to protect heels a bit more (you’ll have to check out the book, heh heh heh) but I can promise you this—that tidbit isn’t the only useful thing you’ll get out of the book.
It’s been published by Storey and is available from Amazon.
And if you want to test your luck, my copy of The Spinner’s Book of Yarn Designs will be given away to a lucky CraftLit listener. To put yourself into the running, visit the February 2013 shownotes for CraftLit and leave a comment about why you would like the book. I’ll use a random number generator to select the winner. (Be sure your email is entered correctly!)

One of the patterns (it was all I had time for) is from me—

I kept getting more and more excited.
Yaaayyyy!
::embed crazy muppet wave!::
Here’s what I can tell you:
it’s a sock;
