Austen—018: Chapters 53–55

Today, chapters 53-55.

I’m thinking that instead of a poll, I just want everyone to look at the librivox.org catalog and tell me what you like. I’ll take the one with the most emails. I think I’ll putter around with some of the short works first, just to give you some variety, then dive into another long book.

Sound good?

As always, Pride and Prejudice is narrated by Karen Savage.

I vote for either War of the Worlds (it would be interesting, I think, for people to see how the actual book differs from movies and the famous Orson Welles radio broadcast) or Turn of the Screw by Henry James (I’d be curious to hear your comments as we go along).

I’ll be happy to hear anything you come up with for the next series, really. I really love your podcast, and we’ve stolen the idea of recording with a blanket over your head. (We just put it over the desk, like a partial hood, rather than smothering ourselves under a full binkie, though.)

I’m always happy when the next CraftLit comes out (though I almost abbreviated that as c-lit, and thought better of it, given that my inner editor is still fifteen and giggles at such things….), because it means I’m going to have an excuse to knit for the next hour without guilt or boredom. I mean, really — if I’m able to exercise my mind with the classics, the knitting’s really secondary, right? Right? ahem.

and I really love your commentary at the beginning of each episode, too. The updates on your life, the socio-political stuffs, the summaries of the cultural things in the book chapters — I love all of it. All. of. it.

So now that this is a book, I’ll end here, but I just wanted to say thanks for putting this together. I’m back in love with Jane Austen AND my sweater’s getting done. Thank you.

I haven’t commented before, but I’ve been listening faithfully, and love the podcast. Thanks for sharing so much with us. I love the Thursday Next books, too!

I still like the idea of Tom Sawyer as a next book :0)

    YAY THURSDAY!
    : )
Yeah, I’ve been toying with doing Tom and then Huck, just to show how much Twain changed in between the writing of the books. Of course, the language in Huck is a problem…hmmm…I’m thinking.

    Thanks so much!
